Both devices are able to give relevant information in the case of a frontal impact as well as a lateral one. While one of the sensors assess the intra-abdominal pressure and the pressure rate combined in the abdominal injury criterion (P*V), the other measures the applied abdominal surface load. Preliminary load limits proposed are based on the first frontal accident reconstructions of the CHILD program. The use of the abdominal sensors and the related load limits may allow a better evaluation of current and future restraint systems and so have a positive effect on road safety.
