In the different research programs, the human subject was never seated in a vehicle, in a frontal impact situation and the experiments were not, therefore, sufficiently representative. To determine a criterion which can be practically applied in conditions approaching reality, tests have been conducted in an "automobile environment" with the occupant subjected to a series of loads comparable to those a real-life victim would experience. An analysis of the data obtained and comparison with other results from tests conducted in different configurations indicate that the force required to fracture the femur is very much dependent upon test conditions, and in particular on the duration of load application.
