N2  - Many articles have been written about motorcycle accidents. Accident investigations have been made to describe the injury panorama and to clarify the accident mechanism (ref 2,3). However, very little is written about the effect of different kinds of protective clothing. Feldcamp (ref 4) showed that severe injuries were diminished by the use of protective clothing from 52.9% to 28.1%. Riders without protective clothing had compound fractures three times more often than riders wearing protective clothing. Engstrom (ref 1) found that out of 39 persons equipped with protective clothing, none had injuries above the AIS-grade III. Neither did he find any serious open fractures among these patients. The aim of this study was to examine the use of different kinds of leather clothing and to evaluate the protective effect of such safety equipment.<p />
