N2  - Types of accident and the resulting injuries suffered by motorcyclists and by moped riders can be contrasted. In the case of the motorcyclist, an accident in which the cyclist's head strikes another vehicle or a fixed obstacle often results in immediate death, while the moped rider, when struck laterally, almost invariably suffers only a temporary impact, and death is usually delayed. The authors consider the most important facts to be the variable frequency of impacts between the head and an adverse vehicle, depending on the configuration of the accident, the mean being 37% for the whole sample studied. The high rate of temporary impacts justifies the development of helmets, which provide an effective protection for the head.<p />
