N2  - The reasons why zonal relationships have to be calibrated are listed, the problems with zonal regression are discussed, and the basic requirements of regression models and the weighted least-squares regression are described. The results of weighted regression, the disaggregate approach, and the extension to non-aggregate zonal variables are detailed. The paper argues that zonal regression will always have a place in transportation models, and that the technique of weighted regression overcomes many of the objections to the method. In order to understand the weighting procedure it is helpful to express the trip-end model in disaggregate form and derive the maximum-likelihood conditions for the zonal observations. The resultant equations can be solved by a form of 2- stage regression analysis, where the best set of weights is found by iteration.<p />
