Hospitals in Libya are overstretched and struggling to deal with hundreds of people killed and thousands injured in the past week by security forces that have been shooting at demonstrators in an attempt to suppress their protests against the regime of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. “The callousness with which Libyan authorities and their hired guns are reportedly shooting live rounds of ammunition at peaceful demonstrators is unconscionable. I am extremely worried that lives are being lost as we speak,” United Nations high commissioner for human rights Navi Pillay told a briefing.
