TY - JOUR PY - 1997// TI - Subclinical hypothyroidism in flight personnel: evaluation for suitability to fly JO - Revue internationale des services de santé des forces armées A1 - Danese, D. SP - 32 EP - 36 VL - 70 IS - 1-3 N2 - A group of 3,324 Italian flight personnel were examined to test the usefulness of TSH assay as a screening test for subclinical hypothydroidism. Forty-two individuals with low serum T4 and high free T4 had further thyroid function tests. High TSH levels were found in 14 individuals, seven of whom were started on levothyroxine. Four individuals also had titers of antiperoxidase antibodies greater than 1:1,000 U/ml; three of these individuals were over age 65. TSH screening is deemed useful in the selection of flight personnel and determination of suitability to fly.
