Urban trauma patients frequently are uninsured, and often are victims of intentionally inflicted penetrating injury, usually caused by firearms. Substance use is a common underlying factor in both urban and rural trauma. This article introduces urban and rural patients. It discusses their past medical and social histories, which are required to help the decision-making process when treating these patients.
