This article describes especially the protection of the head and eyes in motor manual logging in Finland and shows the main 10-year developments since 1980. The importance of proper research and publications as an essential part of developing new protection technology are described and emphasized. A short description of various difficulties in promoting new helmet innovations and in measuring their effects on safety level are given. Examples of the importance of good ergonomic properties as well protection are explained. More multidisciplinary approaches and methods are most probably essential and useful when developing further the protection of the head, eyes, and ears. The compatibility of a single protector with other protective equipment is important.
