The prevalence of homeless women is escalating, and nurses are playing primary roles in teaching, health care, social support, and case finding for women in shelters. This article describes some of the health, social, and psychologic issues facing women in a large urban shelter from the perspective of a senior nurse psychologist at Boston's Long Island Shelter.
