N2  - This registry study investigates whether there are signs of age-related impairment in accident frequencies among female assemblers in the Swedish automobile industry. It was expected that the demands and conditions characterizing assembly work might impair the capacity of older assemblers and make them more likely to sustain accidents. Age-related accident ratios (ARs) were calculated for both non-specific (aggregated) and specific (by type) accidents over a ten-year period, using five age categories and three reference periods. The results revealed that, regardless of accident type, ARs were lower among older assemblers and higher among younger ones. Intermediate age cohorts registered higher ARs at the end of the study period in a few particular instances. The study gives scant support for the likelihood that age-related impairment leads to higher accident occurrence among older female assemblers. Age-related variation between accident types remains worthy of future research attention.<p />
