Journal of Occupational Accidents, 5: 223--231.Hazards of moving material manually are widely recognized. Control of these hazards has been mainly through either training or employee placement and selection procedures. Included among placement and selection procedures are pre-employment strength testing and design of manual handling jobs on the basis of job demands acceptable to the industrial population. This paper presents a simple model for determining maximum acceptable weights of lift (lifting capacity) for male and female industrial workers for a variety of jobs. The determination of lifting capacity is based mainly on the anthropometric variables. A comparison with previous models reveals that the proposed model for lifting capacity estimation is far superior and requires fewer inputs. All model requirements can be measured accurately and quickly within a few minutes.
