The context is briefly presented in terms of the major challenges facing the South African community, the Jewish community per se, the impact of apartheid, the post-apartheid era, specifically the significance of crime, violence, and emigration. Brief reference is made to domestic violence within the general population. An in-depth review is given of the development of the domestic violence programme in the Jewish community, including a critical assessment of challenges and constraints to be addressed.
