Journal of Occupational Accidents, 2: 265-272.A popular view that the severity of an injury following an industrial accident is largely governed by chance is noted and examined by investigating differences between lost-time and non-lost-time accidents occurring in the transmission plant of a motor company. Data were "plotted" onto a conceptual model of an accident. The number of events and the separate components of the model were considered and they showed very different distributions for lost-time and non-lost-time accidents, contradicting the view noted above. A possible reconciliation is suggested.
