N2  - The purpose of this paper is to integrate a Marxist critique of subaltern studies with a feminist one, using Partha Chatterjee's formulation of the "nationalist resolution of the women's question" as a reflector for his and other subaltern theorists' position of hegemony and de-colonisation. Such a Marxist feminist perspective, applied to questions of idology and politics, should help to throw light on aspects of cultural nationalism in India as well as in other places, including the west, where mini-nationalism flourish within the small domain of multiculturalism.<p />
