N2  - Social workers working in substance abuse settings often find that their clients are also survivors of intimate partner violence. This article uses the conceptual frameworks of the transtheoretical model of behavior change and associated motivational interviewing techniques to enhance practitioners’ ability to intervene with women in a holistic manner. We describe specific strategies to increase clients’ motivation and offer specific skills to address abusive relationships. We finish with a case example.
