TY - JOUR PY - 1990// TI - A follow-up study on fatality rates: a comparison between the number of accident fatalities occurring within and after a 24 hours period JO - IATSS research A1 - Kobayashi, M. SP - 54 EP - 59 VL - 14 IS - 2 N2 - The aim of this study was to survey traffic deaths in relation to the time lapsed after fatal accidents occurred. Statistically, accident death tolls in Japan are counted in two different ways: the National Police Agency data within 24 hours and the Ministry of Health and Welfare data within one year observation. The ratio between these two is quite consistent in the ratio 1 : 1.3. In 1988, for example, the police agency data covered almost 76% of the Ministry of health and welfare data. High rates of death at the scene and death on arrival were observed for young males. It is significant to note that almost 70% of the total deaths occurred within 12 hours.
