N2  - Introduced into Japan in the mid-1960s, studded tires have been widely adopted in areas where icey pavement is a problem. Their widespread use has been a source of controversy. Pavement wear by studded tires is now a serious problem. Recently, questions have been raised concerning detrimental effects on the environment from the increased dust and noise generated by these tires. This paper reviews the facts that are currently available on the effects of studded tires on these issues and on safety.<p />
