N2  - Family violence in China was raised as a social issue only within the last decade. Many aspects of family violence have not been responded to by social service agencies or policy makers; nor has it been problematized within the academy. This paper depicts a brief picture of family violence in present China in terms of research, social service and policy making. Because family violence has not to date been incorporated into the political agenda by the government, services cannot be developed, as without government blessing, nongovernmental organizations cannot practically survive. This paper describes how violence is conceptualized within China, examines the extent of the problem and makes recommendations for policy, service provision and research.<p />
