TY - JOUR PY - 2010// TI - Injury risk related to the helmet strap: Mandible and hyoid bone fractures with a hyoepiglottic ligament lesion JO - Injury extra A1 - Badiali, Giovanni A1 - Pasquini, Ernesto A1 - Piccin, Ottavio A1 - Marchetti, Claudio SP - 89 EP - 91 VL - 41 IS - 9 N2 - Hyoid bone fractures are rare (0.002% of all fractures) and most result from strangulation or hanging. Other causes are direct trauma, mostly traffic accidents, and sports injuries, and gunshots, and induced vomiting. The diagnosis is often difficult, especially when associated with other soft tissue injuries or fractures, which may seem more worthy of treatment. Only one hyoid bone fracture caused by a helmet strap in a traffic accident has been reported (L.C. Kuo, H.L. Lin, C.W. Chen and W.C. Lee, Traumatic hyoid bone fracture in patient wearing a helmet: a case report, Am J Emerg Med 26 (2) (2008) 251.e1-2.). We present another case.
