N2  - This paper uses data from the University of Michigan Trucking Industry Program's Survey of Drivers to examine the relationship between safety and the characteristics of drivers and their firms. This data was collected from more than 900 truck drivers at truck stops in the Upper Midwest of the U.S. during 1997 and 1998. Models of driver accidents and compliance with hours-of-service regulations are estimated. Links were found between these safety measures and the economic conditions of truck drivers. Drivers who drive more miles have a greater likelihood to be involved in accidents and to violate the federal Hours of Service (HOS) regulations. Rate and method of pay are also significant across the models estimated, suggesting that drivers who are under more economic pressure are more likely to violate regulations and to be involved in accidents.<p />
