N2  - The assessment of child neglect is the first step in the process of providing specific services and interventions to the victims and their family members. Assessment data provide valuable insight into the nature of the family's situation, as well as their specific treatment needs. Described here are assessment strategies for the detection of child neglect. These strategies are reviewed, along with a description of the assessment measures that are most commonly used to determine child risk as well as the parental factors, child factors, and social/ecological factors related to child neglect. Examples of the use of such assessments in two neglectful families are provided. Advantages and disadvantages of the current assessment process are discussed, as are suggestions for improved assessment in child neglect.<p />
