TY - JOUR PY - 1968// TI - Religious Conversion: A Theory of Deviant Behavior JO - Sociology of religion A1 - Parrucci, Dennis J. SP - 144 EP - 154 VL - 29 IS - 3 N2 - Recognizing the inadequacy of those attempts to explain the phenomenon of religious conversion via over-concern with the more sensational conversions to the "off-beat" sects and cults, this paper represents an attempt to increase the comprehensiveness of our understanding of religious conversion through an inclusion within its scope of those relatively neglected conversions within and between the more conventional socio-religious bodies. For its basic orientation, this theoretical endeavor employs a model of deviancy. Also of central importance to this undertaking is the development of a conversion typology based upon the factors of the degree and the direction of structural change, and the degree and the direction of content change within the belief system.
