N2  - The reason for the existence of medical societies and organizations is too obvious to require explanation or defense. The prime object of medical organization is the dissemination of medical knowledge. New discoveries and new methods are announced at society meetings, and are unselfishly given to the whole profession for the benefit of the public. Medical organizations also promote professional friendships, and maintain the dignity and the honor of the calling. These organizations also stimulate the desire to contribute to human knowledge through clinical and scientific investigation. The mutual benefits and advantages of organizations are apparent in every department of human activity.  This is a memorable day in the history of American pediatrics. The founding of this Academy will have a far-reaching significance in developing the scope and field of pediatrics and, I hope, a beneficent influence on the life and health of those patients whom the pediatricians will reach.<p />
