N2  - The paper outlines research into the travel behaviour impacts of residential estates with privatised and barricaded streets known commonly as 'gated communities'. Through investigations at two particular estates in Brisbane, Australia, it is shown that this built form produces small but significant changes in behaviour, especially pedestrian behaviour, that bring into question whether local authorities should permit such developments if they are sincere about encouraging walking as a mode of transport.<p />
