TY - JOUR PY - 1989// TI - Characterisation of thermal radiation from freely burning oil pool fires JO - Fire safety journal A1 - Bouhafid, A A1 - Vantelon, JP A1 - Souil, JM A1 - Bosseboeuf, G A1 - Rongère, François-Xavier SP - 367 EP - 390 VL - 15 IS - 5 N2 - Fire protection assessment in industrial environment represents a considerable interest. The numerical simulation models are based of course on knowledge of the comportment of fires able to occur and their full-scale characterisation. In this work, experimental investigations of four of the most commonly used oils in the 'Electricite de France' production units are described: control fluids for electrical equipment (UNIVIS J13), lubricant fluids of turboalternators, pumps and diesel engines (DTE 24, DTE medium, SHC 120).The main purpose is to determine the steady-state combustion rate of increasing diameter pools and evaluate the corresponding flame radiative properties. The results obtained allow these oils to be classified as a function of their combustible character and, applying three theoretical approaches, to predict satisfactorily the radiative heat fluxes from the flames to the near environment.
