N2  - Since the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988 there have been significant changes in the way safety is addressed offshore. This paper gives a brief background to these changes. The paper goes on to discuss the quantitative approach to safety being employed offshore and, in particular, the role of performance standard for safety related systems.<p />
