N2  - This paper discusses the challenge of integrating fire safety measures into the overall design of a project. The fire safety strategy must take into account the ways in which the building or installation is to be used, thereby aiming to achieve not only a good standard of fire safety but also better buildings. The need for agreement on fire safety objectives and the search for more quantified approaches to design, based on engineering relationships and measurement, are reviewed.<p />
