It identifies the role of the significant parameters, defines a dimensionless threshold wind speed, at which wind effects become significant, and shows that probability of significant wind effects is not small. Detailed analysis is then presented for four cases: A naturally vented atrium, two adjacent atria where two communicating elevated layers may be formed, a naturally vented stairwell and a pressurized stairwell. The latter analysis shows that the resistance coefficient of the stairwell is a significant factor, that effects the performance of the pressurization system, and a low-resistance stairwell shape is identified.
