N2  - Theory, in the form of a model with four time constants, is presented which describes the thermal response of sprinklers taking into account heat losses from the element and from the frame. The results of experiments are described which give values for the time constants derived. Modifications to the original 'plunge' test are presented which lead to more satisfactory correlation of 'plunge' and 'rate of rise' experiments.<p />
