TY - JOUR PY - 1997// TI - Smoke detection by light extinction over a short distance JO - Fire safety journal A1 - Tompkin, C A1 - Ryser, P SP - 173 EP - 183 VL - 29 IS - 2-3 N2 - Smoke is detected by the measurement of light extinction. Extremely highs sensitivity is realised by the use of an integrated optical circuit. Four wave guides or light paths 50 Am wide and 20 [mu]m deep are embedded in a glass chip; one path is interrupted by a 25 mm air path that allows for the measurement of light extinction. Light emitters and receivers are attached at positions at the end ports of the light paths where maximum optical throughput occurs. The sensitivity of the device is demonstrated experimentally and is compared to other optical measurement devices.
