TY - JOUR PY - 1986// TI - Dealing with uncertainty: Some applications in fire protection engineering JO - Fire safety journal A1 - Watts, J. SP - 127 EP - 134 VL - 11 IS - 1-2 N2 - Uncertainty is prevalent in all aspects of fire protection engineering. Probability, the mathematics of uncertainty, has been used in several ways to help quantify some of the randomness of fire safety. Three probabilistic techniques that have been employed are stress-strength models, Markov processes, and computer simulation. A summary of a stress-strength model for the probability of success of a fire barrier is presented with suggestions for other applications. Markov processes have been used in various ways to describe fire spread. An example is given which in turn has been modeled using computer simulation.
