TY - JOUR PY - 1989// TI - Intelligent gas meters: Will the Japanese beat us again? JO - Gas industries SP - 12 EP - 14 VL - 33 IS - 5 N2 - The Japanese have developed an intelligent gas meter for both residential and commercial applications that automatically shuts off gas supply when leakage is detected. The Japanese intelligent gas meter is composed of: the conventional diaphragm meter; the conventional index (to which others can be added); a D-size lithium battery (7- to 10-year lifetime); and the microprocessor with LED display for communicating cause codes. Shut-off may be triggered by any of three causes perceived by the microprocessor: earthquake sensor; an external alarm that closes the electrical contact shut-off under such circumstances as fire, remote electronic/phone command, or CO2 sensor; and continuous or unusual gas flow. The intelligent gas meter as developed in Japan is microprocessor-based and is therefore easily multi-functional.
