N2  - Aviators who sustain traumatic brain injury (TBI) often have neuropsychiatric symptoms including cognitive and emotional difficulties. In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the United States Air Force (USAF) are charged with determining whether civilian and USAF aviators, respectively, are medically qualified for flying following TBI. This paper discusses the FAA and USAF procedures and rules regarding TBI. Differences are noted in terms of the amount of organisational control exerted over the evaluation process and the degree of individual aviator autonomy due, it is thought, to the divergent mission requirements of these organisations.<p />
