SP - 207 EP - 214 VL - 6 IS - 2 N2 - Two speed surveys were conducted on 19 school zone sections on roads surrounding twelve primary/high schools within the Perth metropolitan area. Driver compliance to the 40 kilometres per hour speed limits was found to be very low when compared to the speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour. The study found that the 40 kilometres per hour speed limit markings had no significant effect on driver speed behaviours in addition to the effects inflicted on drivers by the standard regulatory signs. It is recommended that the findings of this study should not, in general, be used as an argument against the 40 kilometres per hour speed limit markings within the school zones, but as a case for justification in being more selective in considering the sites for the treatment.
