SP - 94 EP - 103 VL - 20 IS - 3 N2 - Background: In the last two decades, there has been increasing interest in health promotion in the higher education sector through the "Healthy Universities" program promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is important to recognize the health related needs of the members of the university community, and to reflect on actions to meet them. One of the main problems regarding the mental health of university students is violence in dating. Considering the above, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the dating violence, depressive symptoms and self-esteem in college students; study the relationship between violence, depression and self-esteem; and promote the implementation of prevention programs in the university community. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with responses from 729 college students, using the "Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationship Inventory," the Beck Depression Inventory and the Coopersmith Inventory to assess self-esteem. Results: The results showed a high prevalence of violence in young university students, particularly verbal-emotional (75%). The attacks were bidirectional nature, both men and women committed and suffered violence. Violent behavior was associated with low self-esteem in women with depressive symptoms in both sexes. Conclusions: Since the focus of the "Healthy Universities" program is important that higher education institutions are promoting health through the creation and dissemination of knowledge, the training of human resources and the promotion of community organization. The results of the study indicate the need to develop educational programs aimed at preventing violence, emotion management and conflict resolution.
