TY - JOUR PY - 2013// TI - Rapid screening for detection and differentiation of detergent powder adulteration in infant milk formula by LC-MS JO - Forensic science international A1 - Tay, Manjun A1 - Fang, Guihua A1 - Chia, Poh Ling A1 - Li, Sam Fong Yau SP - 32 EP - 39 VL - 232 IS - 1-3 N2 - Reports of infant milk formula adulteration by detergent powders as economic frauds and poisoning incidents are common as detergents are readily available and are inexpensive household items. Liquid chromatography (LC)-Qtrap and LC-hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS) in combination with chemometrics were effectively employed to detect the presence of detergent powder adulterated in infant milk formula. Partial least square analysis (PLS) regression was also utilized to quantify the amount of detergent powder in adulterated infant milk formula without the need to purchase any standards. Dodecylbenzenesulfonate (C12-LAS) was identified and verified as the marker which existed in detergent powder using LC-QTOF-MS. The amount of C12-LAS present in the admixture was successfully quantified through standard addition method.
