N2  - AUTHOR'S ABSTRACT: Clients with deficits in controlling anger and aggression can pose special problems for substance abuse treatment providers. Anger leading to violence is frequently higher in substance abusers than in the general population. Although a group treatment for anger management had been implemented for veterans at the San Francisco VA Substance Abuse Outpatient Program (SAOP), no such treatment existed for individual SAOP patients who were inappropriate for or who otherwise did not qualify for group interventions. This study evaluated an individual anger management condition based on Novaco's (1975) cognitive-behavioral stress inoculation procedures. With the use of an a-b-a design, findings revealed significant decreases in anger, substance abuse, and violent behavior at follow-up. Expansion of the model should be explored by future research scientists to include female and male in- and outpatients in both group and individual scenarios.
