The purpose of this study was to provide a management and prevention guide for businesses in the effort to reduce the various stages of workplace violence, including but not limited to, homicide. The study serves as a training manual for human resources professionals, employee assistance providers, and senior management. Method. Case studies of various violent incidents are recorded in an effort to determine the behavioral indicators of potential trouble. The primary violent cases include several United States Postal Service incidents, General Dynamics, and the Elgar Corporation. Other cases were considered from various industries in an effort for a more comprehensive outline of a profile of a potentially dangerous employee. Additional sections offer an understanding of the value and meaning of work, prevention and security measures plus an outline of necessary trauma plans, training programs, and intervention techniques. Results. The case studies indicated that the likelihood of violence in the workplace increased if the employee fit one of five categories. The profiles of potential perpetrators include the psychotic, the chemically dependent, people with histories of prior violence, severe depression, and individuals with an external locus of control. The greater the accumulation of the characteristics, the greater likelihood a violent act will occur. These case studies also indicated ten key behavioral warning signs that will help the corporation in providing psychological assistance to the employee as well as progressive discipline measures including a care-fronting approach to intervention in the workplace. Results of these case studies indicated a need for effective pre-employment screening methods, supervisory training for businesses and corporations nationwide, and a training manual to provide the assistance.
