TY - JOUR PY - 2013// TI - Stigmas and attitudes toward seeking mental health treatment in a sample of veterans and active duty service members JO - Traumatology A1 - Held, Philip A1 - Owens, Gina P. SP - 136 EP - 143 VL - 19 IS - 2 N2 - Although mental health problems are relatively prevalent among service members, research related to treatment-seeking attitudes suggests that a significant number of service members are unwilling to receive treatment for deployment-related mental health problems. The present study examined the relationships between public stigma, self-stigma, and attitudes toward seeking mental health treatment with a sample of 126 active and retired U.S. military service members using an online survey. The results of the present study indicate that self-stigma mediated the relationship between public stigma and attitudes toward seeking mental health treatment.
