N2  - This article examines the effects of punishment celerity and severity simultaneously in a specific deterrence model of drunk driving. Additive and interaction equations are estimated, with legal and nonlegal conditions controlled for. The findings suggest that, when license withdrawal is mandatory, an increase in fines significantly decreases the probability of recidivism. Some effect is also noted for a swift imposition of fines. No independent effect is found for license actions in this analysis. Detailed discussions on the results and public policy implications are provided.<p />
