TY - JOUR PY - 2014// TI - Force health protection support following a natural disaster: the 227th medical detachment's role in response to superstorm Sandy JO - Journal of Special Operations Medicine A1 - Stanley, Scott E. A1 - Faulkenberry, Jason B. SP - 106 EP - 112 VL - 14 IS - 4 N2 - On 3 November 2012, in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, the 227th Preventive Medicine Medical Detachment deployed to support relief operations in New Jersey and New York State. The unit was on the severe weather support mission (SWRF) and ordered to provide preventive medicine support to relief personnel within the affected area. In addition, teams from the 227th conducted environmental surveillance in the two-state region where Army Corps of Engineers were pumping floodwaters from affected neighborhoods. The 227th rapid deployment highlights the complexities associated with defense support to civil authorities and provides excellent teaching points that may enhance units expeditionary posture, regardless of mission.
