N2  - This article examines the issue of training novice drivers to reduce their risk of road accidents. This group of drivers continues to have an excessive accident rate even though driver training has been improved. What to teach is not so much in question as how to teach it. A small study of driving school students by qualitative and cognitive analysis showed that high-level mental operation, understanding of theoretical and practical situations, and the cognitive dimension of risk-taking were all present in driving. This anticipation of risks was a major difficulty for learner drivers and training should involve techniques that enable all types of learner to reach a level of skill required for safe driving.
