TY - JOUR PY - 1979// TI - Design of small-sample home-interview travel surveys JO - Transportation research record A1 - Smith, Michael E. SP - 29 EP - 35 VL - 701 IS - N2 - Procedures for use in designing small-sample home-interview travel surveys are described. The following steps are addressed: (a) Decide on the purpose of the survey, (b) decide which variables should be measured to fulfill the purpose, (c) decide whether a home-interview travel survey can adequately measure the variables in question, (d) determine the coefficients of variation of the variables in question, (e) decide on a level of accuracy and a confidence limit, and (f) based on steps d and e, compute the sample size.

METHODS for using stratified sample frames are also discussed. The techniques are illustrated by using composite data from several urban areas. These data indicate that travel demand models can be developed from a survey of less than 1000 households.
