TY - JOUR PY - 1979// TI - Guidelines for traffic control at isolated intersections on high-speed rural highways JO - Transportation research record A1 - Radwan, Ahmed E. A1 - Sinha, Kumares C. A1 - Michael, Harold L. SP - 10 EP - 17 VL - 737 IS - N2 - This paper involves the development of guidelines for traffic control warrants at isolated intersections on high-speed rural highways by using both field studies and traffic simulation. Gap-acceptance and delay studies were performed at stop-sign-controlled rural intersections in Indiana, and the resulting data were used to validate and modify the UTCS-1 program (known now as NETSIM). Two-way stop signs, pretimed signals, semiactuated signals, and fully actuated signals were evaluated over a range of traffic volumes on both major and minor approaches. Annual economic cost was used as a basis to develop criteria for selecting the most appropriate control type. The resulting warrants are expressed in chart form.
