N2 - OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the association between different types of competitive sports participation and physical activity among adolescents.
METHODS: Data for this secondary analysis were drawn from a nationally representative sample of 34,689 respondents who participated in the Monitoring the Future study.
RESULTS: Compared to nonparticipants, adolescents who participated in at least one competitive sport during the previous year engaged in 1.5 days more of physical activity for at least 60 minutes during the past week. Moreover, adolescents who participated in track and field, baseball/softball, basketball, weightlifting, or lacrosse were found to engage in more physical activity throughout the week.
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that levels of physical activity differ across various types of competitive sports participation.
