The present study was conducted with a sample of youngsters from both sexes with ages between 11 and 21 years old, who sought help at "Nucleo de Estudos do SuiciĀdio" of Psychiatry Department of "Hospital de Santa Maria", from the year 2000 until 2005 inclusive. The main purposes of this study were: a) to characterize epidemiologically this sample; and b) to assess and analyse the reasons for SI and/or SA and the concepts of death, reported by the youngsters in the first assessment interview. The results show that the majority of the young people who attend NES are female and attempt suicide at home, with relatives/friends nearby, the most frequent method being medicinal intoxication. The representations of suicide were mostly of giving up and running away, from life as it is lived. The most frequent explanations given for the gesture are mixed, gathering both external and internal precipitating events.
