TY - JOUR PY - 1961// TI - Headlight glare vs median width JO - Highway Research Board bulletin A1 - Fries, John R. A1 - Ross, L. J. SP - 51 EP - 53 VL - 298 IS - N2 - A determination is made of the median width that will best avoid blinding glare from high-beam headlights of oncoming automobiles. Test a was carried out on a graveled airplane runway with small vegetation growing thereon. It was found, for example, that at 50 mph the safe stopping distance is 350 feet and the minimum safe median width is 30 to 40 feet. To check the results obtained in test a, a source intensity curve with candlepower as a function of median width and distance from the source was prepared. It was concluded that further studies are needed.
