While it has always been recommended that a tractor operator should wear a seatbelt whenever a rollover protective structure (ROPS) is mounted on the machine, the converse has also been recommended: in the absence of a ROPS, an operator should not use a seatbelt (Bittner et al., 1974; National Safety Council, 1978). The reason for not wearing a seatbelt is that a restraint keeps the operator from either jumping or being thrown free from an overturning tractor which, without a ROPS, would cause a crushing injury (Myers et al., 2006). In effect, a vehicle turning upside down is a deathtrap from which a seat-belted operator cannot escape....
