TY - JOUR PY - 2012// TI - A construção mediática do tráfico de seres humanos na imprensa escrita portuguesa JO - Análise psicológica A1 - Couto, Dulce A1 - Machado, Carla A1 - Martins, Carla A1 - GonÇalves, Rui Abrunhosa SP - 231 EP - 246 VL - 30 IS - 1-2 N2 - The growing recognition of trafficking in human beings over the last decade was due in large part to the action of the media, either as a massive information vehicle, either as an active participant in the process of constructing reality. This dual role justifies the need to study their products in order to better understand social phenomena, and particularly those associated with deviation. By analysing the news published by two national daily newspapers, a frequent overlap between trafficking, prostitution and illegal immigration emerges, reflecting the dominance of narratives regarding women's sexual exploitation, which, in turn, contributes to the presence of stereotypes and social alarm messages. However, the main actors are sidelined from the narratives arena, since their discourses are subordinated to the action of the criminal police bodies, giving them control of the spread knowledge regarding the phenomenon. Finally, the need to adopt codes of conduct by media stakeholders is noted in order to avoid the release of messages that appeal to stigma and panic, as well as to promote the reconciliation between commercial pressures and the public interest, ethical and social responsibility.
